Polish Poster Project
The goal of this project was to create a poster based on poster designs in Poland. Poland was and is world renowned for their distinct poster designs. What makes their designs stand out is their simplicity in all aspects of the design. For example, they use color minimally and choose simple styles.
What My Poster is About
I decided to make my polish poster for a play called 12th Night by William Shakespeare. I picked this because the play is a complex story. Therefore I thought it would be fun to cap- ture its essence using minimal forms and colors. The purpose of this poster is to convince people to go watch the play. The target audience would be anyone who likes theatre, but espe- cially adults. However, I also want to interest young adults and teenagers who may not have much knowledge of Shakespeare. Therefore, I want to intrigue viewers of the poster and inter- est them in the play. Overall, I want to create a poster that is unique but that is still recognizable to people who are familiar with the play.
How I decided on the design
Twelfth Night is comedy by William Shakespeare. The main character named Violet is shipwrecked on an island alone. In order to stay safe and get a stable job, she pretends to be her brother Sebastian. Then she is employed by a man named Duke Orsino, who she falls in love with. However, he thinks Violet is a man so he does not like her in that way. Overall, the play is filled with a lot of confusion and deception. It ends happily with Violet marrying Duke and her brother Sebastian marrying Olivia.
To capture the confusion and chaos of the play, I decided to create rings of alternat- ing color. The rings are meant to represent an optical illusion, which can be deceiving, like the play. Additionally, the rings alternate between bright green and magenta, adding intensity to the poster but also insinuating a happy ending.
In the middle of the poster I decided to do a reflection of a person walking but one side is a man and one is a woman. This represents Violets decption when she pretends to be a man.
Finally I decided to make the text look classic and older to represent when Shake- speares plays were written as well as their timelessness.
