Art Update #1
This week post will be my first in a series of posts. This category is where I talk about all my random art projects and experiments that I do that do not end up in my portfolio. The past few months in school have been super fun and I have done a lot of exciting projects. Without further ado lets get into them!
A project that took up a big portion of one class was my Bauhaus project. The purpose of this project was to research the Bauhaus school of design that was located in Germany. The Bauhaus changed how the world does design even though the school was not in operation for very long. After looking through books about the various things the school did, I decided to focus on photomontages. Bauhaus’s photomontages are not your typical photo collages. Theirs focus on abstract arrangement of ideas that do not have a clear meaning or purpose. The arrangement of Bauhaus collages feel random but look intentional.
After looking at a few examples and researched specific techniques, I set out to create my own montages. I sketched out ideas beforehand, but they evolved as I searched for photographs to use. While looking at images my teacher gave me the idea to use paintings as well as photos to create montages. Therefore, I thought it would be fun to create a montage purely using paintings. I used the Library of Congress’s free bank of images for my montages as well as Rijks Museum’s website. Rijks is located in the Netherlands, but their website provides hundreds of free downlands of paintings.
After I printed the images, it was time to began the scary part, cutting them. If I messed up while cutting them, then there was no going back. Thankfully I had already sketched out an idea for each of the three arrangements. However, something I realized while doing this project is that sometimes you have to take risks and experiment. That may seem like the cheesiest overused idea, but it’s true! Experimenting forces people to take risks and sometimes that best ideas happen while taking risks. When I experimented during this project, I got some really cool results!
Honestly, I feel like forcing students to experiment was part of the reason that Bauhaus had their students do photomontages. Photomontages are not strictly tied down to the usual rules of art like painting or sketching seem to be. Unlike painting and sketching, there is no easy way to reverse a mistake while creating a montage. The artist simply has to adapt and make the most of their circumstances. Overall, I really enjoyed making this project and I learned a new art medium.
Another exciting project I did this quarter also forced me to try something new. In this project I made paper and my own stamp. If you ever get the chance to make your own paper and stamp, do it! It is so fun and is hands on!
Making paper from scratch seems like it would be difficult, but in reality, it was pretty straight forward. First, I got bin and filled it with water, and grabbed various tools such as filters, cuch sheets, rollers, and a few other things. Once I gathered my materials, I blended it up some paper and cotton material in water. This blended material is what the paper you create is made out of. Then I put the blended material in my bin of water and swirled the particles around. Next, I used my filters to pick up the paper fragments swirling around. When I had a thick enough coating of fragments on the catch filter, I used cuch sheets and rollers to dry the paper out. Finally, I used a heat press to dry out the paper some more and then put it out to air dry.
To make my sheets of paper look a little more unique I added pink dye to the water. Then to add some texture blended up dried flowers and also added them to the water. I was super happy with how the paper turned out, I think everyone should try it out at least once!
The final part of the project was creating a stamp. Before this project I had made a stamp once when I was a lot younger. As you can imaging though it did not turn out very well, so I was excited to try again. To create a stamp first I sketched out a few different ideas, until I found something I was happy with. Since it is finally feeling warm like spring, I decided to do a spring inspired stamp. In the end I decided on a sketch with a cat and some flowers. After transferring my sketch to the stamp, I began carving it out. This took a lot longer than I anticipated, but I took my time. Similarly to the photomontages, if I messed up there was no going back. Overall, I was happy with how it turned out, but I loved it even more when I stamped it on my paper. When I added ink to the stamp it ended up with a totally different look then I was expecting. However, I loved it and it looked so cool even though it was not what I was expecting.
In conclusion what I have learned from these projects is that experimentation is key. It is good to take risks and try new things, in the end it will help us grow. It is ok to make mistakes and not like now be happy with your finished product. I know I have learned from my mistakes and found ways to adapt to my situations. That’s the exciting thing about art it is always changing and there is no correct way to do it.

Something I mentioned in my first blog post was my passion for adventure and exploration. I love traveling to new places, seeing new sights, and meeting new people. It is always so amazing to me that despite how different each culture is, we are so similar in so many ways. We all laugh, love, cry, explore, and chase are dreams. Life may look different to each person, but at the end of the day we all need love and support from others.
I have traveled to quite few states in America, as well as Bolivia, Norway, Sweden, and Denmark. I hope to travel more in the future, but I am blessed to have traveled where I have thus far. In this blog post I will dive deep into my Scandinavia trip on what I learned and saw while there.
In high school my school took a group of kids to Scandinavia on a music tour. I would like to say that these teachers were very brave for taking a group of kids to a foreign country! Personally, I do not know if I could do it, but thankfully most of us were pretty responsible. On this music tour, the first place we stopped at was Norway. We spent the most time here and some of us were able to get to know students going to school in Norway. They were super friendly and easy to connect with.
The scenery of the parts of Norway we were in were so beautiful! I have never seen a winter wonderland quite like it. The ground was covered in snow the entire time we were in Norway and some of the fjords were still completely frozen over.
One of my favorite memories of Norway was seeing the inside of the Oslo City Hall located in Oslo, Norway. Oslo City Hall is where they award the nobel peace prize every year since the 1920s. From the outside the building looks kind of boring, but on the inside it is so beautiful. The room opens up into this huge gathering area with high ceilings and murals on every wall.
The murals use lots of bright colors every part of the wall draws the viewers eyes toward them. These murals are meant to depict the struggles of the Norwegian people from their roots to the prosperity that they live in today. It has so many beautiful depictions that I can not express everything I saw. However, the moment I saw it, it took my breath away and I could not stop smiling.
The murals are showcased by the simple but elegant marble floor and the windows and the top of the lobby. The floor and natural light all accentuate the huge murals and point your eyes toward them.

The next place I traveled to Stockholm, Sweden one of the most beautiful cities I have ever seen. It was such a cool mix of modern and old architecture that was super fun to wander around. Additionally, the city is right next on the Baltic sea so the palace and the government buildings are on their own island. This allows viewers to look out at the city and the sea from the edges of the island. If you look across the channel you can also see so many beautiful hotels and museums on the other side. I was only there for one day, but I was completely captivated by the city and I would love to go back.
One of my favorite things about Stockholm was how walkable it was. I was able to wander around the city with my friends easily and I felt safe the entire time. While walking around my friends and I stumbled upon a bakery. This bakery made the BEST creampuffs that I have ever had. It was light and fluffy with just the perfect amount of sweetness. Overall, it was one of the best pastries I have ever had and I would love to have it again.
One of the last stops we made on the trip was Copenhagen Denmark. Copenhagen is my favorite city that I have ever been to. One of our sponsors payed for our entire group to ride on one of the tourist boats around the city. It may seem silly, but it is a great way to see the sites of the city and learn the history behind them.
Overall, the city was very walking and biking friendly. This made it easy, safe and fun to navigate. The most famous section of the city is rows of brightly colored houses and restaurant that line an inlet from the city. Their bright colors brighten the gloom of the sky and were very eye catching.
While in Denmark I was able to go into one of their palaces. The grandeur of the palace was so beautiful, and it was filled with artwork. In one room there were huge tapestries on the wall depicting Danish history. They were in an abstract design but very intricate. I wonder how long it took to create each of those tapestries. Despite the beauty of the tapestries my favorite room was the Queen’s Library. It looked like it came straight out of beauty and the beast. My favorite part was the painting of storks that covered part of the ceiling.
Something I have noticed about European artwork within cathedrals and palaces is that it forces you to look up. The viewer most always be looking around searching for artwork because its everywhere. Even though I have seen many beautiful paintings, I never fail to be amazed whenever I see a new one. Each artist has their own technique and style that no two paintings are the same.
In conclusion I desperately want to go back and explore that part of the world. It was so beautiful and I know I have only scratched the surface in discovering the wonders of these countries.

My Journey to Becoming a Graphic Design Student
Hello Everyone!
This is my first official blog post on my new website! I excited for the possibilities this website holds to share my passion for art and design with others. I also hope this website allows me to connect and inspire people.
Currently I am an aspiring artist and designer pursuing a degree in graphic design. I am excited for the opportunity to grow as a designer and for possibilities this career holds for me! Part of the purpose of the blog is to inspire other designers and to document my journey. I also want to share what I have learned as I gain experience in art and design.
One passion that I have is travel and exploring new places. Therefore, I also want to use this website to share my travels and the exciting things I have learned along the way.
Since this is my first post, I am going introduce myself and share a little of my artistic background. From a young age I loved creating art and trying to reproduce life around me. I was always captivated by picture books and graphic novels. The artists of those books were able to create their own reality that no one else could recreate. Their drawings made stories come alive and I could spend hours looking at those books.
Another form of art that captivated me was animation. Beautiful images, characters, and scenery somehow came alive because of animators. They were able to create something alive simply using pencils, pens, ink, computers, and many other mediums. On my Disney DVD movies they would have extras giving behind the scenes information about how they made the movie. I used to always watch those extras every time I finished an animated movie and I never failed to be inspired. Today I am still in love with animated movies, and I feel inspired to create art every time I watch one.
Due to my love of picture books, drawing, and animated movies, I knew I had to pursue a field in the art realm. I thought about several different options such as illustrator, animator, story board artist, graphic designer, interior designer, and fashion designer. However, I never knew exactly what I wanted to do. Additionally, I never knew anyone in those fields growing up, so I had no one to ask about it.
My parents fully supported my passion of art and design, but as I got older, I began to see my passion as impractical. I compared myself to other artists and began to think I was not talented enough to pursue a career in art. Therefore, I turned my sights to other things that would secure me a job. That was until Covid-19 hit in 2020.
During 2020 I was stuck at home a lot with my family, so I had to find new ways to entertain myself. Then one day I picked up a pencil, opened a sketchbook, and starting drawing again. At that point I had not drawn seriously for a few years. However, the moment I picked up a pencil I was captivated, and I wanted to improve my drawing. Over the course of the next year, I watched tutorial after tutorial trying to learn everything I could. I realized that I still had a passion for creativity and that was not something that could go away. However I still tried to ignore my passion again once my senior year of high school hit.
Artificial intelligence became a big thing and once again I began to see it the arts as an impractical career and endangered career. I needed a job where I could make money and be sure that I could get a job after I graduated. However, I decided I still wanted to pursue some sort of art in college, so I decided to get an art minor instead.
That all changed when I toured graphic design programs at various universities. I looked at various project’s students had worked on, and I got really excited. It was at that moment I finally realized which career I wanted to pursue.
Since then, it has not always been smooth sailing, but in the long run I think this is the career for me. I love being able to practice my creativity every day, and often I still find my assignments fill me with excitement. I do not know what my future has in store or what kind of job I will end up with. However, something I have learned is that God has given us all different gifts and each one is important. Therefore, pursue your dreams and goals even if you are not sure if they will work out. It may seem scary, but you never know where the journey will lead you.
